Long-time friend des femmes writer/director Kanchi Wichmann’s captivating debut charts 20-something dykes Liza and Sally entangled lives in crisis. In a band, broke and on a permanent comedown, their one-time loving relationship is disintegrating, and yet neither can walk away. Released in 2011, Wichmann’s provocative film split audiences at the time for its unflinching depiction of a lesbian relationship on the rocks. Shot around East London, the film is striking time capsule of the city’s fast disappearing queer counterculture, including the now closed SH!shop in Hoxton. Shot on 16mm, and made in close collaboration with director of photography Dawid Pietkiewicz and sound designer, composer Lein Sangster, Break My Fall alluringly and authentically records a scene that Wichmann knew and loved.
Tantalising queer cinematic resonances linger with Chantal Akerman, Allison Anders, Bette Gordon, Vivienne Dick and Rainer Werner Fassbinder, yet Wichmann totally owns the film. Often funny and absurd at times, the film’s punk heart is drawn from its popping soundtrack featuring queer feminist local bands (Peggy Sue, The Raincoats, Wet Dog and Micachu & The Shapes) and Wichmann herself, an accomplished musician.
Recently trimmed and smartly re-edited to mark Peccadillo’s 10thanniversary re-release, we can’t wait to present Break My Fall Redux at the Rio’s Pink Palace (one of the film’s key locations) with a special Q&A with Kanchi and members of the cast and crew.
